THANOPOULOS S.A., based in Patra, Greece, has completed a comprehensive retrofit of its AMMANN CB220 asphalt plant, bringing combustion, controls, and plant integration up to current operational and compliance standards.
In addition to extensive spare-part replacements, new electrical panels, and wear-part renewals, the project centered on two principal interventions:
Together, these upgrades modernize the thermal process and the plant’s automation layer, improving efficiency, reliability, and data transparency.
The MIB-5.18 burner provides fuel optionality for procurement flexibility and cost optimization. Closed-loop air–fuel control and stable flame behavior across a wide turndown range improve specific fuel consumption and temperature stability, while faster heat-up shortens start-ups and changeovers. A streamlined gas train, robust ignition, and accessible wear parts support shorter service windows and reduced unplanned downtime.

The as1 Argon control system delivers a unified HMI that integrates the dryer, baghouse, mixer, weighing, and burner under coordinated setpoints and interlocks. High-precision batching and temperature control enhance mix uniformity and reduce rework. Real-time KPIs—throughput, energy intensity, temperature profiles, and moisture compensation—enable on-shift optimization, while automated batch records and event logs strengthen traceability and audit readiness. Contextual diagnostics and alarm management shorten fault isolation, and secure remote access reduces response times while supporting future options such as higher RAP ratios, additive dosing, and advanced analytics.

This project is part of a broader series of as1 control-system retrofits delivered by SPANOS Group across Greece, modernizing AMMANN plants and ensuring long-term performance, data visibility, and serviceability for partners in the asphalt industry.
In day-to-day operation, the upgraded CB220 delivers more consistent quality, higher availability, and lower specific operating costs and emissions—while establishing a platform for incremental sustainability and performance enhancements. With the retrofit complete, THANOPOULOS S.A.’s plant is positioned for the next decade: resilient on energy, rigorous on quality, and ready to scale sustainability initiatives as client specifications evolve.
